Why Puerto Lempira
Puerto Lempira, also known as Auhya Yari, is the departmental capital of Gracias a Dios in northeastern Honduras. Situated along the edge of the Caratasca Lagoon, it stands as the largest settlement within the department despite lacking paved roadways. The town serves as a key hub for the region's Miskito population and shares a sister-city relationship with Plattsburgh, New York.
The town bears the name of Lempira, a 16th-century Lenca indigenous leader who headed a resistance campaign against invading Spanish forces during the 1530s. Puerto Lempira assumed the role of departmental capital in 1975, taking over the designation from Brus Laguna. During the 1980s, the location functioned as an operational center for CIA activities directed against the Sandinistas.
Demographically, the municipality encompasses a blend of rural and urban residents, with the majority of the population identifying as indigenous Miskito. A smaller portion of the populace includes Mestizo, Afro-Honduran, and White communities. While Miskito represents the primary and official language of the territory, residents also speak Mayangna and Spanish.
Visitors traveling to Puerto Lempira rely on air transportation, as the town is served by the Puerto Lempira Airport, which runs scheduled flights several times per week. The regional environment is characterized by a tropical rainforest climate that remains warm, humid, and rainy throughout the year. March marks the driest period, whereas the months from June through December experience heavy precipitation, regularly averaging around or above 300 millimeters of rainfall monthly.
