Queen’s Park Savannah, Port of Spain

Welcome to Queen's Park Savannah, locally known simply as "the Savannah." Covering about 260 acres with a 2.2-mile perimeter, this level expanse is Port of Spain's largest open space. Once a sugarcane farm purchased in 1817 and later a cattle pasture, it evolved into a beloved public park, even briefly serving as an airstrip in the early 20th century. Today, you will find active sports pitches for cricket, football, and rugby set against a ring of perimeter trees, alongside the Hollows—a drained former reservoir featuring ornamental shrubs.

History and architecture line its edges: along Maraval Road on the western border stand the Magnificent Seven, an eccentric group of late-Victorian buildings including Queen's Royal College, Hayes Court, Whitehall, Mille Fleurs, Roomor, and Stollmeyer's Castle. Just north, you will spot the Royal Botanic Gardens, Emperor Valley Zoo, and official presidential and prime minister residences. On the southern side, the Grand Stand transforms into the "Big Yard" during Carnival, hosting major cultural events like Panorama steelpan finals and Calypso Monarch competitions.
