Why Quivicán

Quivicán is a town and municipality situated in the southwestern region of Cuba's Mayabeque Province. Facing the Gulf of Batabanó along its southern border, the municipality covers a total land area of 283 square kilometers (109 square miles). Its name originates from the indigenous Taíno language, historically spelled as Quibicán.

Established in the year 1700, the municipality has developed a distinct local heritage over the centuries. It is recognized as the birthplace of prominent cultural and athletic figures, including the celebrated pianists Bebo Valdés and Chucho Valdés, as well as the professional soccer player Alejandro Miguel Portal Oliva.

Administratively, the municipality is organized into ten distinct districts or barrios. These include the main center of Quivican Pueblo, alongside La Salud, San Felipe, Pablo Noriega, San Agustín, Guiro Boñingal, Güiro Marrero, Santa Mónica, Aguacate, and Fajardo. As of 2022, the area was home to a population of 30,016 residents, resulting in a population density of approximately 110 people per square kilometer (280 per square mile).

Travelers visiting the region can explore its various municipal barrios and experience a settled coastal municipality positioned along the Gulf of Batabanó. The community offers a view into the local life and history of southwestern Mayabeque Province.
