Why Raipur
Raipur is the capital and most populous city of the Indian state of Chhattisgarh, serving as a primary commercial and industrial center in the region. Situated near the middle of a vast plain celebrated for growing numerous varieties of rice, the city is bounded by the Mahanadi River to its east and dense forests to its south. Surrounding geographical features include the Maikal Hills to the northwest, the Chota Nagpur Plateau extending to the north, and the Deccan Plateau located to the south.
Historically belonging to the territory known as Dakshina Kosala, the area was under the influence of the Maurya Empire and later governed by the Guptas in the sixth century. A seventh-century Buddhist kingdom later shifted its capital to Sirpur within the region, after which the Sharabpuriyas and subsequently the Kalachuris held power. By the fourteenth century, a local branch of the Kalachuris captured eighteen forts in the surrounding territory, contributing to the historical origin of the name Chhattisgarh.
In modern times, Raipur has developed into a major economic force with substantial industrial activity and high national rankings for civic cleanliness and livability. It is a leading producer of steel and iron, accommodating extensive rolling mills, sponge iron facilities, ferro-alloy plants, and heavy manufacturing sites. The local economy is further sustained by hundreds of rice mills, agricultural processing units, plywood plants, chemical manufacturing, and a prominent public service sector.
The city features a tropical wet and dry climate with moderate conditions through much of the year. The months from March to June bring intense summer heat and dry winds, followed by the monsoon season from mid-June to early October, which delivers the majority of the annual rainfall. Winters span from November through February and remain generally mild. Raipur is accessible via major national highways, local expressways connecting to nearby Naya Raipur, an interstate bus terminal, and the Raipur Junction railway station positioned on the Howrah-Nagpur-Mumbai line.
