Why Rajkot

Located in the central Saurashtra region of Gujarat on the Kathiawar peninsula, Rajkot is the fourth-largest city in the state. Situated along the banks of the Aji and Nyari rivers—which dry up outside of the monsoon months—the city serves as the administrative headquarters for the surrounding Rajkot district.

Founded in 1612 by Thakur Sahib Vibhoji Ajoji Jadeja, Rajkot served as the capital of a princely state and later became a major regional headquarters during British rule. Following Indian independence, it functioned as the capital of Saurashtra State before being incorporated into Gujarat. The city played a prominent role in the Indian independence movement and was notably home to Mahatma Gandhi. Often referred to as "Rangilu Rajkot" or "Chitranagri," the city maintains a vibrant local heritage, including its native Dayro music genre used for folk storytelling.

Visitors can explore several historical and cultural landmarks throughout the city. The central Jubilee Garden houses Connaught Hall, the Watson Museum, and the Lang Library. Key sites connected to Mahatma Gandhi include his former home, Kaba Gandhi No Delo, and the Mahatma Gandhi Museum housed within his former high school. Other notable points of interest include the Rotary Dolls Museum—which displays over 1,400 international dolls—the non-sectarian Trimandir temple outside the city, Atal Sarovar, and the 9-hole golf course at Ishwaria. The local population celebrates key cultural events such as the five-day Janmastami Mela at the Race Course grounds, Garba dancing during Navratri, Diwali fireworks, and kite flying during Makar Sankranti.

Rajkot features a hot semi-arid climate. Summers run from mid-March to mid-June with elevated temperatures, followed by the monsoon season through October. Mild and pleasant weather prevails from November to February. The city is accessible across the region and serves as a major industrial, economic, and sporting hub, regularly hosting international and domestic cricket matches at the Madhavrao Sindhia Cricket Ground and the Niranjan Shah Stadium.
