Welcome to Rajwada, also known as the Holkar Palace or Old Palace, a grand seven-story historical monument located in Khajuri Bazaar near the center of Indore. First constructed by the Holkars of the Maratha empire starting in 1747 A.D. under Malhar Rao Holkar, this rectangular structure features impressive cylindrical corner bastions and an iconic large wooden entrance door reinforced with iron studs. As you explore, you will admire its blend of Maratha architectural styles, featuring stone on the lower three floors and wood on the upper levels.
Inside, the entryway leads into a courtyard with a Maratha arched Ganesha hall, alongside balconies, windows, and corridors linking to galleried rooms. Over time, the palace survived fires, riots, and multiple careful restorations—including a major effort using 200-year-old blueprints, thin bricks in lime mortar, and rough black basalt flooring. Located near the Krishnapura Chhatri, Rajwada sits adjacent to Shiv Vilas Palace and faces a lovely garden adorned with a statue of Maharani Ahilya Bai Holkar, fountains, and an artificial waterfall.
