Râmnicu Vâlcea serves as the primary urban center and administrative capital of Vâlcea County in south-central Romania. Nestled within the historic province of Oltenia, the municipality sits directly at the foothills of the Southern Carpathians. It recorded a population of more than 93,000 residents in the 2021 census and administers thirteen surrounding rural settlements.

The geographical setting of the city features impressive mountain ranges and river landscapes. The Cozia Mountains are situated roughly 12 kilometers from the urban center, while the higher Făgăraș and Lotrului ranges lie approximately 40 kilometers away. Along its southern edge, the terrain transitions into the Getic Plateau and the Olt River valley. Transportation across the area is facilitated by key roadways, including national road DN7—which forms part of European route E81—alongside national routes DN64 and DN67. Rail travel is supported by line 201, which parallels the path of the Olt River.

Human settlement in the vicinity dates back to Dacian and Roman antiquity, when a fortification named Buridava stood on the site. Written records first documented the medieval town in 1388 during the reign of Prince Mircea cel Bătrân. Over the following centuries, the local Cetățuia fortress evolved into a residence for regional leaders and Orthodox bishops. The town grew into an important cultural center where Romania's first printing press and paper mill were established. After suffering extensive damage during Habsburg rule in the early eighteenth century, the town was broadly redesigned in the 1980s, resulting in an architectural blend of socialist realism and historic Brâncovenesc design.

The city holds a prominent position in national cultural history as the place where Romania's national anthem was originally performed in 1848. Visitors can view the memorial house dedicated to composer Anton Pann, located in the central district. The municipality is also known for its sporting tradition, acting as the home base for SCM Râmnicu Vâlcea, a women's handball club that regularly competes in high-level European competitions.

The climate is categorized as humid continental with hot summers, bordering on humid subtropical conditions. Rain showers are most frequent during the summer months, while the winter season averages around thirty days annually with measurable snow accumulation.
