Why Reyhanlı
Reyhanlı is a municipal town and administrative district situated within Hatay Province in the southern region of Turkey. Covering a total geographic area of 367 square kilometres, the district is located in close proximity to the country's southern border with Syria. As of the year 2022, the local population was recorded at 108,092 people. Within its administrative boundaries, the district of Reyhanlı is subdivided into a total of 47 distinct neighbourhoods that encompass both the town proper and its surrounding territory.
The area possesses a long historical background and was formerly known by the names İrtah, Artah, and Ar-Rayhaniya. In the southernmost environs of the district lies Yenişehir, an area believed to be situated near the ancient village site of Imma or Immae. This historic location is notable for its connection to major ancient events, including the Battle of Immae in 272, and is also considered to be associated with the historic conflict known as the Battle of Antioch in 218.
The local physical geography is characterized by a typical Mediterranean climate, providing conditions well suited for rural land use. Reyhanlı operates primarily as an agricultural district, utilizing freshwater resources provided by the dedicated Reyhanlı reservoir to irrigate surrounding fields. The primary agricultural produce cultivated within the district includes wheat, cotton, and various other cereal grains. Pastoral farming also plays a significant role in the local agricultural sector, with farmers keeping herds of cattle, sheep, and goats across the region.
From a geographic and transit perspective, Reyhanlı is strategically positioned on the primary road connecting the Turkish city of İskenderun with the Syrian city of Aleppo. Approximately 5 kilometres (or 3 miles) southeast of the central town of Reyhanlı lies the Cilvegözü border crossing point. Serving as the primary gateway to Bab al-Hawa in Syria, this location holds the distinction of being the busiest land border crossing facility located between Turkey and Syria.
