Why Roskilde Cathedral
Roskilde Cathedral, known locally as Roskilde Domkirke, is an active church of the Lutheran Church of Denmark located in the eastern city of Roskilde on the island of Zealand. Elevated to global distinction as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995, it serves as the official royal burial church for Danish monarchs and draws over 165,000 visitors every year.
Positioned on a site with a long ecclesiastical history, the current structure traces its origin back to the late 12th century. Construction began under Bishop Absalon using newly introduced fired brick technology, making it one of the earliest examples of a Gothic brick cathedral in Scandinavia. The design gracefully combines Romanesque features with French Gothic elements introduced during its 13th-century completion. Over subsequent centuries, extensive additions and architectural alterations were made to accommodate expanding royal chapels.
The cathedral's historical path reflects Denmark's broad cultural shifts. Prior to the current building, a 10th-century wooden stave church built by King Harald Bluetooth stood nearby, followed by an 11th-century travertine basilica. Relics, such as the skull of Saint Lucius, once brought medieval pilgrims to the site. Following the Reformation in 1536, the church's extensive land holdings reverted to the Crown, and the space was reconfigured for public congregational use. Subsequent royal patrons contributed significant interior features, including a detailed altarpiece, a pulpit, a sandstone entrance portal, and iconic twin spires erected in 1633. The cathedral also provided the setting for the signing of the Treaty of Roskilde in 1658.
Inside, visitors can view a rich array of monuments spanning eight centuries of European architectural history. The church holds the remains of Danish rulers starting from Queen Margrethe I, whose ornate 15th-century sarcophagus sits near the choir. Highlights include the 15th-century Chapel of the Magi, the 17th-century burial chapel of Christian IV, and the neoclassical Frederick V's chapel. Alongside its historic funerary art and original furnishings, the functional cathedral regularly hosts musical concerts throughout the year.
