Why Rosso
Rosso serves as a major urban center in southwestern Mauritania and functions as the administrative capital of the Trarza Region. Situated along the northern bank of the Senegal River, the city lies approximately 204 kilometers south of the national capital, Nouakchott. Positioned at the head of a navigable stretch of the river that allows year-round transport, Rosso has expanded significantly over recent decades, evolving from a small settlement into the third-largest city in the country.
Historically, the locality was the capital of the Emirate of Trarza, a precolonial Sahrawi state, and later developed as a key staging post for the trade in gum arabic. During the period of French colonial administration, Mauritania and Senegal were governed as a single entity. Following independence, the new international frontier was drawn along the Senegal River, effectively dividing the original community into two parts. Today, the population combines historical Wolof-speaking roots with residents from various ethnic backgrounds who migrated from northern regions to escape severe desertification.
The town occupies an essential transit position along the primary road network connecting Nouakchott with Dakar, the capital of Senegal. An international ferry service operates across the Senegal River, making Rosso a critical border crossing point. Economic activity in the city is strongly linked to cross-border commerce, while the surrounding district serves as a key agricultural market hub along the country's southern boundary.
Despite experiencing a hot desert climate, the locality receives roughly 300 millimeters of rain annually, which is the highest yearly rainfall recorded in Mauritania. This water supply supports a narrow strip of farmland along the river corridor. To counter the encroaching Sahara, major irrigation initiatives funded by the United Arab Emirates have been constructed along the river's northern bank, enabling the expanded cultivation of cash crops such as mint.
Travelers in the area often access the nearby Diawling National Park, located in the surrounding countryside. Within the urban boundary, notable features include the internationally recognized Satara Zone Housing project, the ISET technology institute offering agricultural instruction, and a small local library established in 2005.
