Why Roubaix

Located in northern France along the border with Belgium, Roubaix is the fourth largest municipality in the Hauts-de-France region by population. Positioned directly northeast of Lille and south of Tourcoing, the city forms an integral part of the European Metropolis of Lille, a vast urban network shared with dozens of surrounding French and Belgian communes.

Geographically, Roubaix rests on the flat plain of Flanders, occupying a compact land area with low-lying terrain that ranges from 17 to 52 meters above sea level. The local hydrology features historic streams alongside the Canal de Roubaix. Constructed in 1877 to connect local manufacturing to regional water routes, the canal was closed in 1985 before being reopened for recreational boating traffic in 2011. The city experiences a temperate oceanic climate characterized by mild summer temperatures, winter periods that can drop below freezing, and precipitation that is rarely intense.

Originally expanding around its early core near the Church of Saint Martin, Roubaix evolved from a provincial market town into a prominent regional textile manufacturing center during the 19th century. Rapid industrialization fueled widespread urban expansion, supported by significant rural migration and substantial immigration, particularly from neighboring Belgium. Following the decline of its major textile industries in the mid-1970s, the city faced economic challenges and urban decay, while retaining characteristic features of its historical boomtown era.

Designated as an official Town of Art and History in 2000, Roubaix celebrates a rich architectural inheritance from the 19th-century Industrial Revolution. Visitors can view numerous historic monuments across its diverse neighborhoods, including civic landmarks like the Hôtel de Ville and sacred structures such as the Church of Notre Dame. The cityscape is further decorated with public sculptures and memorial works produced by distinguished French sculptors between the late 19th and mid-20th centuries.

The city's cultural fabric is shaped by a diverse population and a heritage where a local Picard variant, known as Roubaignot, was traditionally spoken for centuries. Today, Roubaix offers a combination of historic industrial architecture and restored waterways, easily accessible across the wider cross-border metropolitan region.
