Why Samalut
Samalut is a city and administrative center located in the Minya Governorate of Upper Egypt. Situated along the west bank of the Nile River, it lies approximately 225 kilometers south of the capital city of Cairo. The surrounding administrative district encompasses nine primary villages along with 54 smaller rural settlements and hamlets.
The city possesses a long historical record, with its earliest documented mention appearing in a Coptic funerary text thought to originate from around the fifth century AD. Culturally, the area holds significant importance within Christian history, particularly due to its association with early religious traditions in the region.
A major destination for visitors in the vicinity is the Monastery of the Virgin Mary, situated at Gebel el-Teir. Recognized as a prominent Christian pilgrimage location, the site features a historical church established in 328 AD by Empress Helena, the mother of Constantine the Great. Local tradition identifies this spot as one of the resting places of the Holy Family during their journey through Egypt.
Another notable religious site near Samalut is located in the nearby village of Al Our. Here, the Martyrs of Faith and Homeland Church serves as both a shrine and the final burial ground dedicated to the 21 Coptic Martyrs of Libya.
Geographically, Samalut experiences an arid desert climate according to the Köppen climate classification system. The city's position on the Nile makes it a distinct point of interest within Upper Egypt's historical and cultural landscape.
