Why Samut Songkhram
Located in the Central Thailand region roughly 63 kilometers from Bangkok, Samut Songkhram serves as the provincial capital and sits along the primary travel route toward the southern part of the country. Positioned where the Mae Klong River empties into the Gulf of Thailand, the city takes its name from Sanskrit roots—"samudra," meaning ocean, and "sangrama," meaning war—which together translate to "war ocean." As of 2023, the urban center is home to a population of 25,623 residents.
The surrounding landscape is defined by its coastal geography and an extensive network of canals, locally called khlongs. These waterways distribute river water throughout the area for agricultural irrigation. Along the coastline, the terrain features numerous evaporation ponds dedicated to the production of sea salt. The administrative boundaries of the city center, which correspond to the Mae Klong subdistrict, encompass an area of eight square kilometers following municipal expansions in the mid-twentieth century.
Historically, the region was referred to as Suan Nok, meaning "outer garden," during the Ayutthaya period when it was governed by nearby Ratchaburi. The area gained provincial status under the reign of King Taksin. It holds historical significance as the origin of Queen Amarindra, consort of King Rama I, as well as the birthplace of King Rama II. A dedicated memorial park commemorates the birthplace of King Rama II within the nearby Amphawa district. The local municipality was officially established in 1936 and later enlarged in 1965. Furthermore, the region is known historically as the birthplace of Chang and Eng Bunker, the original pair referred to as the Siamese twins.
The local economy in Samut Songkhram relies heavily on marine industries. A large portion of the population earns a living through fishing or by working in three local seafood processing plants. The cultural life of the community is centered around religion, with Theravada Buddhism practiced by the majority of inhabitants. The urban area contains six active Buddhist temples as well as a Christian church to serve its residents.
Travelers can access Samut Songkhram via several major roadways and a distinct rail link. The municipality sits at a key junction connecting eastbound Highway 35 toward Bangkok, westbound Highway 35 toward Pak Tho in Ratchaburi Province, and northbound Highway 325 toward Bang Phae. Additionally, the area is connected by the Maeklong Railway, a 33.7-kilometer train line running from Ban Laem station in Samut Sakhon directly to Maeklong station in Samut Songkhram.
