Santa Monica Pier 🇺🇸

The Santa Monica Pier is a prominent coastal landmark situated at the terminus of Colorado Avenue in Santa Monica, California. Integrated into the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area, the structure is actually comprised of two adjoining piers that were historically constructed under separate ownership.

The original Municipal Pier opened in September 1909 primarily to transport sewage pipes past the ocean surf. In 1916, amusement pioneers Charles and Arthur Looff constructed the shorter, wider Pleasure Pier alongside it. Over the decades, this section hosted a wooden roller coaster, various rides, and the grand La Monica Ballroom, which was eventually demolished in 1963. In 1938, the federal Works Project Administration added the pier's entry gate and bridge. After winter storms in 1982 and 1983 destroyed more than a third of the lower deck and pilings, city repair initiatives preserved the structure under the direction of the organization now known as the Santa Monica Pier Corporation.

Today, the pier features Pacific Park, an amusement park introduced in 1996 that boasts a solar-powered Ferris wheel. Another centerpiece is the 1920s Looff Hippodrome, which houses a restored 1922 carousel featuring 44 hand-carved wooden horses accompanied by a calliope, earning it a listing on the National Register of Historic Places. The boardwalk area is packed with concession stands, retail shops, video arcades, restaurants, pubs, a trapeze school, and live street performers.

In addition to amusement rides, visitors can explore marine life at the Santa Monica Pier Aquarium, managed by the Heal the Bay organization, or gather for seasonal outdoor events such as live concerts and film viewings. The western tip of the pier provides dedicated space for anglers, though official advisories caution against eating caught fish due to elevated mercury and PCB levels.

Beyond its physical features, the pier has gained widespread cultural visibility. Because of its location within the studio filming zone, it frequently serves as a backdrop for feature films, television broadcasts, literature, music, and video game settings.
