When you step inside St. Salvator's Cathedral (Sint-Salvatorskathedraal) in Bruges, Belgium, you are exploring the city's main Roman Catholic church, dedicated to the risen savior and Saint-Donatius of Reims. Originally founded as a common parish church back in the tenth century, this resilient building survived centuries of change.
It was elevated to cathedral status in 1834 after French occupiers destroyed the nearby Sint-Donaaskathedraal. As you approach, you will admire its imposing 99-meter fortress-like west tower. Designed in a personal Romanesque style by English architect Robert Chantrell following an 1839 fire, the tower features a 12th-century base topped with a small peak added after public criticism.
Inside, you can walk through a grand 101-meter-long interior packed with impressive historical treasures saved from the destroyed former cathedral. Make sure you view the remarkable 1731 Brussels wall-carpets crafted by Jasper van der Borcht, along with the original paintings used as their design models. As you explore, look for the magnificent grand organ, originally constructed by Jacobus Van Eynde between 1717 and 1719, which features 60 stops across three manuals and still fills the cathedral with music during services and concert performances today.
