Why Solwezi
Solwezi is an administrative center in northwestern Zambia, functioning as the capital of the mineral-rich North-Western Province as well as Solwezi District. Situated at an elevation of approximately 1,397 meters above sea level along the T5 route, the settlement lies roughly 177 kilometers northwest of Chingola and 275 kilometers southeast of Mwinilunga.
The area experiences a humid subtropical climate characterized by marked wet and dry periods. Temperatures reach their highest points during October and November, whereas July registers as the coolest month. Plentiful rainfall arrives throughout the wet season between November and March, while conditions remain mostly dry from May through September.
Cultural life in Solwezi is shaped by several groups, with the Kaonde representing the largest tribal community alongside significant Lunda and Luvale populations. Both the Kaonde and Lunda descend from the historic Luba-Lunda Empire of Congo. Archaeological evidence from the nearby Kansanshi Mine reveals that the Kaonde were among the earliest people in Zambia to mine copper, with extraction practices dating back to the Iron Age.
The local economy is heavily oriented around resource extraction, with copper serving as the primary mineral alongside cobalt, gold, and uranium. Situated about ten kilometers north of town, the Kansanshi Mine yields copper and gold ore, having operated intermittently since the early twentieth century. Beyond industrial facilities, visitors can explore the Kifubwa Rock National Monument, located about six kilometers south of the central district along the Kifubwa River. This protected zone covers around 2,590 square kilometers surrounding the Kifubwa Stream Cave, which contains Paleolithic rock inscriptions carbon-dated to approximately 6300 BC.
Travel to and within Solwezi relies heavily on the T5 Motorway, a highway connecting Zambia's Copperbelt Province with neighboring Angola. Regional air transport is supported by Solwezi Airport, located adjacent to the main motorway. Local movement within the town primarily involves walking or driving along area roads, including the central thoroughfare of Independence Road.
