When you visit Tegucigalpa, Honduras, you cannot miss the St. Michael the Archangel Cathedral, a declared National Monument and one of the country's most well-preserved historical buildings. Established after a 1746 fire destroyed the original town church, this Baroque masterwork was constructed between 1765 and 1786.
It stood as the city's largest building through the end of the nineteenth century and remains a central landmark of Honduran history, having survived major civil wars and an 1823 earthquake. As you step inside this single-vaulted structure—measuring 60 meters long and 18 meters high—you will marvel at its towering 30-meter dome and recently restored original salmon-colored exterior. Art lovers can admire exquisite eighteenth-century paintings by José Miguel Gómez, including the "Four Evangelists" decorating the vault, alongside "Holy Family" and "the Holy Supper." Be sure to examine the main altarpiece crafted in the rockery style, the silver front of the main altar, and the beautiful sculpture of San Miguel.
Outside, you can stroll through the remodeled atrium and side courtyards, where a back patio holds an altar honoring the Virgin of Lourdes. You will also discover the burial sites of influential historical figures, including past Honduran presidents.
