Welcome to Stirling Gardens, a charming and historically rich public park nestled right in the heart of Perth, Western Australia. Located at the prominent corner of St Georges Terrace and Barrack Street, this peaceful green space sits conveniently west of Government House and just north of the Supreme Court buildings. As you stroll through the grounds, you will discover that this urban haven is classified by the National Trust as part of a series of distinguished landscape features.
It offers a wonderful opportunity to view a group of significant sculpture items while soaking in local history. Originally established in 1845 by the Perth Vineyard Society with official government approval, the site was leased to Henry Laroche Cole in 1846 before reverting to government control. It was famously tended by Government Gardener Enoch Barratt between 1868 and 1880, and was even known historically as Stirling Square.
A true centerpiece for your visit is the remarkable bronze statue of Alexander Forrest, brother of John Forrest. Created by sculptor Pietro Porcelli, this impressive piece underwent a fascinating journey from Guildford clay and plaster of Paris to wax casting in Italy before being unveiled in 1903 and relocated here in 1916.
