Why Stóra Dímun
Stóra Dímun, also simply known as Dímun, is an island situated in the southern portion of the Faroe Islands. Belonging to the municipality of Skúvoy, this isolated destination features a single farm on its southern side, which serves as the island's sole settlement. The island's name combines a Celtic or Scandinavian element meaning two-peaked with a modifier meaning great, contrasting it with nearby Lítla Dímun. It contains a lighthouse and boasts two primary summits, Høgoyggj at 396 meters and Klettarnir at 308 meters.
While the island supported numerous families starting in the 13th century, its resident population has decreased significantly over time, with seven people recorded in two families in 2018 and five total residents in September 2025. Historical structures included an old church, though only its ruins remained prior to 1920, and no trace of it exists today. Agriculture forms the core of the local way of life, sustained by soil enriched over millennia by seabird droppings. The farm manages 450 ewes, slaughters six to eight calves annually, and is recognized for its turnip production as well as hundreds of sheepskins processed each year.
BirdLife International has designated Stóra Dímun as an Important Bird Area due to its critical role as a breeding site for massive colonies of marine birds. The island provides nesting grounds for tens of thousands of pairs of Atlantic puffins and European storm petrels, alongside smaller populations of black guillemots. Visitors traveling to the area during the summer months can observe these vast bird colonies and the dramatic natural landscape.
Reaching the island requires careful planning due to its isolated location and terrain. Maritime access is restricted to moments when the surrounding waters and weather are completely calm and clear. To ensure year-round connectivity, a scheduled helicopter service operates flights to the island twice each week.
