You will find the Sultan Ahmed Mosque, popularly known as the Blue Mosque, standing proudly in Istanbul, Turkey, right across from the Hagia Sophia next to the historic Hippodrome. Built between 1609 and 1617 under Sultan Ahmed I, this iconic monument of Ottoman architecture synthesizes classical Ottoman and Byzantine styles. When you step inside, you will experience a grand prayer hall anchored by a central dome measuring 77 feet in diameter and rising 141 feet high, framed by cascading semi-domes and four massive cylindrical pillars.

The lower walls and upper gallery feature over 21,000 Iznik tiles displaying more than fifty floral, tree, and fruit designs. Painted motifs in predominantly blue shades cover upper surfaces, giving the landmark its popular name. You can explore the vast courtyard, marvel at the exterior flanked by six minarets, and observe intricate features like the finely carved marble mihrab and minbar.

As part of the Historic Areas of Istanbul, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1985, the mosque complex also encompasses Ahmed's tomb and a madrasa. Whether you admire its exterior skyline profile or its sprawling interior, visiting this historic site lets you connect directly with classical Ottoman heritage.
