Why Swarzędz
Swarzędz is a town situated in west-central Poland within the Greater Poland Voivodeship and the Poznań metropolitan area. Serving as the seat of a mixed urban-rural commune, the town has a strong heritage tied to craft and manufacturing, particularly in woodworking, carpentry, and upholstery. Positioned along historic trade pathways, it forms a well-connected destination directly adjacent to the regional center of Poznań.
The settlement's origins date back centuries, with written records documenting a settlement on the site in 1366 and its name linked to the pre-Christian Slavic cult of Svarog. Benefiting from its position along the route from Poznań to Masovia, the site was owned by the Łodzia and Górka noble families. In 1638, Zygmunt Grudziński founded the town of Grzymałowo here, which retained its original name while receiving town rights confirmed by King Władysław IV Vasa. Craft guilds flourished from the 17th century onward, eventually leading to the establishment of Poland's first mechanized furniture factory in the early 20th century.
Visitors to Swarzędz can explore several notable cultural landmarks in and around the town. Within Swarzędz itself stands the 18th-century Church of St. Martin, as well as the Professor Ryszard Kostecki open-air museum, which highlights European beekeeping as a branch of the National Museum of Agriculture in Szreniawa. In neighboring Uzarzewo, visitors can visit a 19th-century park, an 1860s farmstead home to a Hunting Museum, and the Church of the Archangel Michael. Nearby Wierzenica offers the 16th-century wooden Church of St. Nikolaus and an ancient graveyard with burials extending back to the Bronze Age.
Recreational facilities and regional nature trails surround the municipality. The local area includes an aerosport facility managed by the Poznań flying club, as well as a dedicated bicycle route that runs from Poznań through the Dębiniec nature reserve, continuing through Swarzędz onward to Pobiedziska. Travelers can easily reach the town by road via route E92 or by train, as the local railway station provides direct rail links to major urban destinations such as Poznań, Warsaw, Łódź, and Szczecin.
