Why Synelnykove
Located in Dnipropetrovsk Oblast in eastern Ukraine, Synelnykove is a city and municipality that serves as the administrative center of Synelnykove Raion. It stands as the largest urban center in the southeastern area of the region. As of recent estimates, the population is under 30,000 residents, having declined from over 37,000 in 1989. The local community is predominantly Ukrainian, with a smaller Russian minority.
The settlement originated in the 19th century within the Yekaterinoslav Governorate on private property granted by the imperial government to Russian Governor Ivan Sinelnikov. Official history traces the founding to August 1868, when the location functioned merely as a train stop. The site took its name from the noble Synelnikov family, who held ownership of the surrounding lands through the end of the 18th century.
Synelnykove's growth was closely tied to its expanding rail connection. In the late 19th century, the station joined the Kursk–Kharkiv–Sevastopol railway line and officially opened in November 1873. The arrival of the railroad transformed the community into a vital regional transit junction, stimulating commercial enterprise and industrial activity. By 1917, the location became a district center within the governorate, later gaining official city status in 1932.
Throughout the 20th century, the municipality experienced significant administrative shifts and wartime occupation between October 1941 and September 1943. After decades of operating as a city of oblast significance, Synelnykove was fully merged into the surrounding raion during regional administrative reforms in July 2020. Under national decolonization legislation, local authorities and state committees have actively considered official renaming proposals for the municipality.
