Why Taichung

Situated in the Taichung Basin along the western coastal plain of Taiwan, Taichung is a special municipality and the second-largest city on the island, with a population exceeding 2.86 million. Its surrounding geography is defined by the Central Mountain Range to the east, rolling hills stretching north toward Miaoli County, flat agricultural plains reaching south into Changhua County, and the Dadu Plateau positioned to the northwest. Shielded by mountain ranges and northern hills, the city features a warm humid subtropical climate with an average annual temperature of 23.3 °C (73.9 °F) and lower annual rainfall than many other major Taiwanese cities, resulting in infrequent major typhoon disruptions.

Originally inhabited by indigenous peoples who formed the 17th-century Kingdom of Middag, the region saw Chinese settlement growth beginning with the hamlet of Toatun in 1705. Named Taiwan-fu during the late Qing dynasty when planned as a provincial capital, the area underwent extensive modern urban planning under Japanese administration starting in 1895. During this period, Taichung developed into a significant center for Taiwanese nationalism and cultural preservation. The modern administrative structure was established on December 25, 2010, when the original provincial city combined with the surrounding county to form a unified special municipality.

Culture and the arts play a central role in the city's modern identity. Visitors can explore major national institutions, including the National Museum of Natural Science, the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts, the National Taichung Theater, the National Library of Public Information, and the National Taiwan Museum of Comics, alongside performance venues for the National Taiwan Symphony Orchestra. Significant historical sites include various local temples, the Lin Family Gardens, and Taichung Park, which contains a historical tower moved from the former north gate. Traditional commercial heritage persists in areas like the city's first public market, built in 1908 along Jiguang Road.

Taichung is widely recognized for its culinary heritage, notably as the home of suncakes and the birthplace of bubble tea, which originated at the local Chun Shui Tang teahouse. Industrially, the city serves as a hub for advanced technology, tool machinery, and bicycle manufacturing, hosting major corporate facilities in the Central Taiwan Science Park. Its modern financial center and central business district are concentrated in the 7th Redevelopment Zone.

Transportation throughout the city utilizes a radial road system extending outward from the central district along key thoroughfares like Taiwan Boulevard. Public transit includes a comprehensive bus network and the MRT Green Line, complemented by conventional rail at Taichung Railway Station and high-speed rail services located in Wuri District. Regional air transport is supported through Taichung Airport.
