Located just about three miles north of Nineveh, this fascinating archaeological site provides a unique glimpse into the rise and fall of the Neo-Assyrian Empire. First mentioned in a chronicle of the Middle Assyrian ruler Arik-den-ili, Tarbiṣu grew from a minor town into a place of great prominence after King Sennacherib relocated the imperial capital to nearby Nineveh.

When you visit, you will be stepping onto ground shaped by legendary rulers. Discover the legacy of two grand palaces, including one built by Esarhaddon for his son Ashurbanipal, alongside two historic temples. Among them stands the notable Temple of Nergal, constructed by Sennacherib and expanded by Ashurbanipal.

You can also trace the history of the magnificent stone-paved road Sennacherib built to connect Tarbiṣu directly to Nineveh's northwest wall. Though the city was captured by the Medes in 614 BC and faded alongside the empire, nineteenth-century excavations by Austen Henry Layard and Sir Henry Rawlinson uncovered remarkable relics here, including a gold-wrapped red carnelian cylinder.
