Temple of Poseidon 🇮🇹

When you visit the historic center of Taranto, Italy, you can stand before the oldest temple in Magna Graecia. Located in modern Piazza Castello, the Temple of Poseidon—also known as the Doric Temple—is the only visible ancient Greek religious structure remaining in the old town. Dating back to the first quarter of the sixth century BC, this ancient site offers you a unique glimpse into classical antiquity.

As you explore the area near the Palazzo di Città and the Monastery of San Michele, you will see the striking remnants of ancient architecture made from local carparo stone. What remains visible today are two imposing Doric columns standing 8.47 meters high, along with three drums from a third column base. Look closely at the design: the column drums are stacked without a central pin and feature very low-profile capitals.

Though archaeologist Luigi Viola attributed the site to Poseidon in the late 19th century, scholars suggest it may have actually been dedicated to female divinities like Artemis, Persephone, or Hera. Over the centuries, the site served as a granary, a Christian church, and an industrial area before parts were reused in surrounding buildings. It is a compelling, honest look at layered history.
