Why Teresópolis
Located in the Serra Fluminense roughly 94 kilometers from the state capital, Teresópolis is the highest municipality in the state of Rio de Janeiro, resting at an elevation of 871 meters. Named in honor of Empress Teresa Cristina, wife of Emperor Pedro II, the municipality covers a total area of over 770 square kilometers of mountainous terrain, including an urban center spanning approximately 54 square kilometers.
Prior to European colonization, the region was inhabited by various Indigenous groups, including the Puri, Tamoio, Timbira, Temiminó, and Guarani. During the colonial period, the mountain forests also served as a sanctuary for escaped enslaved Africans and Indigenous people, who formed resistant communities such as the Quilombo da Serra. In the early nineteenth century, British merchant George March acquired land in what is now the Alto neighborhood. His estate developed into a model farm, establishing a lasting market-gardening tradition and serving as a key rest stop for travelers journeying between Rio de Janeiro and Minas Gerais.
Teresópolis officially gained political and administrative independence from Magé on July 6, 1891. The area's development as a summer resort and agricultural hub accelerated in the early twentieth century following the completion of the Estrada de Ferro Therezópolis railway in 1908. This rail link facilitated the transport of goods and passengers across the Serra dos Órgãos until 1957, when rail service ended and road transport took precedence, largely along the route of the Rodovia Santos Dumont (BR-116).
Surrounded by dramatic mountain landscapes, Teresópolis is closely tied to nature conservation and outdoor recreation. The municipality hosts several nationally significant protected areas, including Serra dos Órgãos National Park, Três Picos State Park, and Montanhas de Teresópolis Municipal Nature Park. Visitors explore the region's rugged geography, river valleys, and notable natural features such as the Cascata do Imbuí waterfall and the Maria da Prata Gorge.
In addition to its natural environment, Teresópolis features various cultural and historical attractions. It is home to the official training center of the Brazil national football team and hosts the Feirinha do Alto, a long-standing artisanal craft market with over 700 exhibitors. Architectural and historical landmarks scattered across the city include the Mother Church of Saint Teresa, the Church of Saint Anthony of Paquequer, Palacete Granado, Teresa Cristina Palace, the Judith Fountain, and the Granja Guarani Viewpoint. Supporting its tourism-driven economy, the city offers an established hotel infrastructure and hosts regular events.
