Why Titusville

Titusville serves as the seat of Brevard County in eastern Florida. Situated along the Indian River Lagoon, which forms part of the Intracoastal Waterway, the city lies directly west of Merritt Island and the Kennedy Space Center, and south-southwest of the Canaveral National Seashore. Encompassing roughly 34 square miles, the community experiences a humid subtropical climate characterized by hot, humid summer seasons and mild winters that historically drew winter tourists arriving by rail.

Human presence in the region extends back thousands of years, as evidenced by the Windover Archeological Site, a designated National Historic Landmark from the middle Archaic Period. The Ais indigenous people later inhabited the area, gathering wild berries and fishing the lagoon until their disappearance around 1760. Settlers initially called the community Sand Point before it was renamed Titusville in 1873, after founder Henry T. Titus won a game of dominoes to select the name. Following its incorporation in 1887, the town grew as an agricultural shipping center for local citrus and pineapples. Later, the rapid expansion of the nearby space program beginning in the mid-twentieth century sparked significant growth, earning the community nicknames such as Space City USA and Miracle City.

Travelers exploring Titusville can visit a variety of historic sites and cultural attractions. Notable historical architecture includes the Pritchard House, Spell House, Judge George Robbins House, and St. Gabriel's Episcopal Church, which was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The city also hosts numerous institutions, including the North Brevard Historical Museum, the American Police Hall of Fame & Museum, the Valiant Air Command Warbird Museum, the U.S. Space Walk of Fame and Museum, and the United States Astronaut Hall of Fame. Aviation history is highlighted each March during the TICO Warbird Air Show, which draws tens of thousands of visitors.

The high-level A. Max Brewer Bridge spans the river to connect Titusville directly to the scenic environments of the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge and Canaveral National Seashore. The surrounding countryside is also ecologically unique as the only habitat in the world for an endangered native plant known as the Titusville mint, which grows along a 13-mile stretch north toward Mims. Local commercial options include Titus Landing, an outdoor shopping venue built on the former site of the town's Miracle City Mall.
