Located near the Jaffa Gate entrance to the Old City of Jerusalem, the Tower of David—also known as the Citadel—is an ancient fortress and dynamic contemporary museum. Standing atop the historic Western Hill, this impressive site rests on layers of ancient fortifications built by the Hasmoneans, Herodians, Byzantines, and Early Muslims before being rebuilt during the Mamluk and Ottoman periods. Within the Citadel's historic chambers, the museum showcases 4,000 years of Jerusalem's history, spanning from its origins as a Canaanite city through to modern times. You can step into the outdoor courtyard to view intriguing archaeological remains dating back 2,700 years, including Herodian stone ashlars.
