Step back in time at Tres Zapotes, an extraordinary Mesoamerican archaeological site nestled in the Papaloapan River plain near Santiago Tuxtla, Veracruz. Situated between the forested Los Tuxtlas Mountains and lush river flatlands, this rare location boasts a 2,000-year history spanning the Olmec, Epi-Olmec, and Classic Veracruz cultural periods. When you visit, you will explore a historically decentralized ancient city featuring over 160 mounds and platforms divided into four distinct architectural groups.

Unlike other Olmec capitals, Tres Zapotes developed its own unique local style of sculpture using stone sourced from nearby Cerro el Vigía. Marvel at two locally carved colossal heads—Monument A and Monument Q—which stand slightly under 1.5 meters tall, and discover the origins of early Mesoamerican writing systems. You will also uncover fascinating artifacts like Stela D, an Epi-Olmec carving set inside a monster's mouth.

Don't miss the local museum in the adjacent village of Tres Zapotes, where you can view these colossal heads up close alongside half of the famous basalt Stela C, which bears one of the oldest Mesoamerican Long Count calendar dates ever recorded.
