Why Tung Lung Chau
Tung Lung Chau, also known historically as Nam Tong Island or Nam Fat Tong, is a largely uninhabited island situated off the southern tip of the Clear Water Bay Peninsula in Hong Kong's New Territories. Locally referred to as Tung Lung To or Tung Lung Island, the area falls under the administrative jurisdiction of Sai Kung District. It provides a quiet coastal environment characterized by historical landmarks and dramatic natural landscapes.
Spanning an area of 2.42 square kilometers (0.93 square miles), the island forms the eastern boundary of the Tathong Channel, which acts as an entrance to Victoria Harbour through Lei Yue Mun. Its northern edge is separated from the mainland peninsula by the narrow Fat Tong Mun Channel. The island features rugged terrain that rises to its highest point at Nam Tong Peak, reaching an elevation of 250 meters above sea level.
The island holds a rich historical background. Emperor Duanzong of the Southern Song dynasty once stayed at Kwu Tap on the island, and the name Tung Lung Chau began appearing on maps around 1845, replacing the earlier romanization of Tam-too. During World War II, Japanese forces established a small gun position near Tathong Point to monitor the surrounding waters, an installation believed to have prompted Allied bombing attacks on the island.
Several historic sights and declared monuments are located across the island. The 300-year-old Tung Lung Fort has been refurbished and sits within the three-hectare Tung Lung Fort Special Area designated in 1979. Nearby lies Hong Kong's largest ancient rock carving, measuring 180 centimeters by 240 centimeters, which was documented in the 1819 Gazetteer of Xin'an County. At Nam Tong, visitors can also find the Hung Shing Temple, constructed prior to 1931, which houses a prominent natural feature known as the Holy Rock emerging from the rear wall of its right chamber.
Outdoors enthusiasts visit the island for recreational activities, as it features dedicated camping grounds near the fort as well as notable sport climbing locations such as Technical Wall and Sea Gully Wall. Access to Tung Lung Chau is primarily available on weekends via local kai-to ferry services operating from Sam Ka Tsuen near Lei Yue Mun, taking approximately 30 minutes, with additional ferry routes serving the island from Sai Wan Ho.
