Why Udine

Udine is a city located in northeastern Italy within the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region, serving as the historical capital of the Friuli territory. Positioned on a high plain between the Adriatic Sea and the Carnic Alps, the city is flanked by the Cormor stream to the west and the Torre stream to the east. It occupies a key geographical position near the borders of Slovenia and Austria along major European transport routes. At the center of the city, an isolated artificial hill serves as the site for the historic castle.

Human presence in the surrounding area dates back to the Neolithic period, with written records first mentioning the local castle in AD 983. Udine developed into a major regional commercial hub after the Patriarchs of Aquileia established their residence there in the 13th century. The city came under the control of the Republic of Venice in 1420 and remained a Venetian territory until 1797. Control subsequently shifted between Habsburg, French, and Austrian rule until Udine was incorporated into the Kingdom of Italy in 1866. During World War I, the city temporarily served as the base for the Italian High Command.

The city center contains significant historic architecture, much of it concentrated around Piazza della Libertà. Landmarks on the square include the 15th-century Venetian-Gothic town hall known as the Loggia del Lionello, a clock tower, the Renaissance Loggia di San Giovanni, and various historical statues and fountains. Overlooking the square is the Renaissance-style Udine Castle, rebuilt in the 16th century, which features one of Europe's oldest parliament halls. Notable religious architecture includes the 14th-century Cathedral of Udine, decorated with Baroque elements and artworks by Giambattista Tiepolo, alongside the ancient Church of St. Mary of the Castle and the Oratorio della Purità.

Visitors can explore several cultural sights, including the Patriarchal Palace with its historic library wing, as well as municipal art and history collections, modern art galleries, and an ethnographic museum. Outdoor spaces include the Orto Botanico Friulano and the Parco Botanico Friulano Cormor. Cultural life is influenced by regional languages such as Friulian and Venetian, as well as annual events including the Friuli D.O.C. wine and food festival in September and the Far East Film Festival held in April.

Udine features a humid subtropical climate with precipitation occurring year-round, peaking during the spring and autumn seasons. Travel to and from the city is facilitated by the Udine railway station, which offers domestic routes across Italy alongside international train services to Austria and Germany. Regional air travel is served by Trieste Airport, located approximately 44 kilometers to the south.
