Uhuru Gardens 🇰🇪

You will find Uhuru Gardens National Monument and Museum located in the Lang'ata area along Lang'ata Road, just three miles southwest of central Nairobi. Spanning 68 acres as Kenya's largest urban memorial park, this historic site marks the exact ground where Kenya declared independence from British colonial rule on December 12, 1963. Before becoming a symbol of national liberation, the land served as a British detention facility holding Mau Mau prisoners.

Today, following an extensive redevelopment by the Kenya Defence Forces, you can explore grounds thoughtfully arranged from the air in the shape of Kenya's coat of arms. Walk past manicured lawns, picnic spots, and a main entrance water fountain before entering the museum complex through the 72-meter-long Tunnel of Martyrs. Outside, stand beneath the historic Mũgumo fig tree where the national flag was first raised, or marvel at the 24-meter-high Independence Commemorative Monument featuring clasped hands and a peace dove.

At the Plaza of the People, you will encounter stone carvings honoring freedom leaders Dedan Kimathi and Mekatilili wa Menza inscribed with the national anthem. It is an unmissable destination for discovering Kenya's rich heritage and journey to freedom.
