Why Upata
Situated in northern Bolívar State within the Guayana region, Upata is the third-largest city in the state and serves as the capital of Piar Municipality. Positioned between the Orinoco and Cuyuní river basins, the town sits along the Yocoima River valley. Its name originates from an indigenous term, likely associated with the Kamaracoto group, which is believed to translate to "Rose of the mountain" after the daughter of a local chief.
Geographically, the city rests at an elevation between 340 and 360 meters above sea level within the ancient Guayana Massif. To the west lies the reservoir created by the Guri Hydroelectric Complex, while the mineral-rich, biodiverse foothills of the Sierra Imataca border the eastern side. Upata experiences a tropical savanna climate, maintaining an average yearly temperature of 26 °C. Temperatures peak in August at up to 36 °C, while annual rainfall across the city typically ranges between 900 and 1,300 millimeters, with primary rains occurring in August, November, and January.
Initial efforts to establish a town occurred around 1739, leading to its official founding on July 7, 1762, by Capuchin missionary Fray Antonio de Cervera under the name Villa del Yocoima de San Antonio de Padua. Over time, the area developed a diverse population comprising individuals of European, Indigenous, African, Asian, and South American heritage. Today, the local economy relies heavily on agriculture and livestock, particularly cattle farming, beef production, and dairying. Upata is especially recognized for producing traditional cheeses like Queso Telita Guayanes alongside varieties such as ricotta and mozzarella.
Visitors to Upata can explore several natural landmarks and public sites throughout the valley. Prominent geographic features include the Stone of Santa Maria, the Hill of the Bull, the aquifers of La Carata, and the Caves of Timoteo located in Cerro El Jobo. Atop the Guacarapo Hills stands a large concrete monument dedicated to the Virgin of Peace. Within the town, notable sites include Simón Bolívar Square, Alejandro Otero Bicentennial Park, Military Park "The Soldier," and the Simon Chavez Stadium, which supports local athletic events alongside two regional soccer clubs.
