Why Vella Lavella

Vella Lavella is an island situated in the Western Province of the Solomon Islands within the southwestern Pacific Ocean. Belonging to the New Georgia Group, it lies west of New Georgia and east of the Treasury Islands, with Choiseul to the north and Shortland to the northwest. The terrain is largely defined by volcanic features, including lowland rainforests, volcanic cones, a single thermal spring, and selective offshore coral reefs. Mount Tambisala forms the highest point on the island at 790 meters, while the younger volcano of Nonda reaches 750 meters and remains classified as active despite having no recorded eruptions in modern history.

The island experiences a wet, tropical climate and is subject to natural events such as earthquakes and cyclones. Small rivers flow down from the mountainous interior toward the coast, supplying fresh water for the irrigated horticulture practiced by local residents, who live almost entirely along the coastline. In the northwestern sector, a 14,641-hectare region is recognized by BirdLife International as an Important Bird Area. This site shelters populations of white-winged fantails, Kolombangara monarchs, and native Vella Lavella white-eyes, though timber logging presents a notable environmental concern.

Archaeological investigations have uncovered painted pottery shards on Vella Lavella dating back 2,000 to 3,000 years. The primary local speech, the Bilua language, belongs to the Papuan language family, distinguishing it from the Austronesian languages spoken across most of the Solomon Islands and suggesting an early population arrival outside standard Melanesian settlement patterns. The island became part of the British Solomon Islands protectorate in March 1893, later gaining independence alongside the rest of the nation in 1978.

During World War II, the island was occupied by imperial Japanese forces before Allied troops initiated a landing at Barakoma in August 1943. American and New Zealand forces advanced along the coastlines, culminating in the evacuation of Japanese troops that October. Following the battle, the Allies constructed an airbase at Barakoma Airfield, which served as the operational home for the VMF-214 "Black Sheep" squadron under Gregory "Pappy" Boyington during missions targeting Rabaul. In contemporary governance, the island's North Vella Lavella Constituency has been represented in the national parliament by figures such as former Foreign Minister Milner Tozaka.
