Why Verla
Verla is a remarkably intact nineteenth-century industrial village located along the northern Kymi River in Jaala, Kouvola, Finland. Recognized for its historical representation of early wood-processing operations and industrial community life, the site earned a place on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1996. The complex features a preserved groundwood and board mill, residential quarters, and hydroelectric plants spanning several eras.
The village's geography is defined by its position along the river. The western bank accommodates the primary industrial structures, the wooden residence of the mill owner, and an adjacent park. Across the water on the eastern bank, workers' housing is arranged in a structured layout. Most factory buildings were constructed out of red brick using Neo-Gothic architectural elements. Despite this traditional styling, the facility was technologically modern during its operational era. Notable structures include the core mill, a drying plant, a flour mill, storehouses, and three power plants built in the 1920s, 1954, and 1995. Prehistoric rock paintings dating back approximately 6,000 years are also located on the eastern side of the river, displaying red ink depictions of elks, human figures, and geometric shapes.
Industrial activity at Verla began in 1872 when Hugo Neuman established the initial groundwood mill, which burned down in 1876. A larger facility was subsequently founded in 1882 by Gottlieb Kreidl and Louis Haenel. Most of the present structures were constructed between 1885 and 1902. The site was purchased by the Kymmene Corporation in 1908 and remained functional until July 18, 1964, when its final original workers retired.
Following its closure, the location was repurposed and opened to the public in 1972 as a museum dedicated to board mill technology. Visitors to the museum can view original machinery kept in its original working positions, supplemented by a few pieces relocated from other structures. Guided tours lead guests through the step-by-step manufacturing method, tracing the process from initial timber cutting and pulp creation through to the drying, sorting, and packaging of finished board.
