Viharamahadevi Park 🇱🇰

Welcome to Viharamahadevi Park, formerly known as Victoria Park, a 45-acre green space nestled in Cinnamon Gardens, Colombo. Built by the British colonial administration and currently maintained by the Colombo Municipal Council, it holds the title of the oldest and largest public park in Colombo. Originally named after Queen Victoria, it was renamed in 1958 to honor Queen Viharamahadevi, mother of King Dutugamunu.

This historic site served as a British Army base during World War II and previously hosted first-class cricket matches. Today, it stands as Colombo's only large-scale public park, offering a peaceful retreat right in front of the colonial-era Town Hall. When you visit, you will find a huge Buddha statue, which replaced the original statue of Queen Victoria, set alongside a series of cascading water fountains.

As you stroll through the grounds, you can explore a mini zoo, a children's play area, and even an old BAC Jet Provost aircraft. Be sure to look out for Muscovy ducks swimming in the artificial lake and wandering along the grassy banks. At the park's western end, you can also view the Cenotaph War Memorial and the Colombo Public Library, or catch an event at the Open Air Stadium.
