Why Vijayawada
Vijayawada, historically known as Bezawada, is the second-largest city in the state of Andhra Pradesh and serves as the administrative headquarters for the NTR district. Situated along the banks of the Krishna River and flanked by the Eastern Ghats and the Indrakeeladri Hills, the city functions as a major commercial, cultural, and educational center. It is a key agricultural trading hub, particularly renowned for its extensive mango commerce centered around the Nunna market, which distributes regional varieties such as Banganapalle and Totapuri to domestic and export destinations.
Founded around 626 AD by the Paricchedi Kings, the city has a long history and rich mythological background. It was ruled by the Vishnukundina dynasty and hosted the Chinese Buddhist scholar Xuanzang during the seventh century. Local tradition attributes the name Vijayawada, meaning place of victory, to Goddess Durga resting on Indrakeeladri Hill after defeating the demon Mahishasura. Another legend links its former name, Bezawada, to the epic figure Arjuna, who is said to have carved a mountain passage for the Krishna River after receiving the Pashupatastra weapon from Lord Shiva atop the local hills.
Religious and historical landmarks are located throughout the city. The prominent Kanaka Durga Temple sits atop Indrakeeladri Hill, attracting millions of visitors and serving as a key center for the Krishna River Pushkaram rituals. Architectural heritage sites include the fourth-to-ninth-century rock-cut temples in the Mogalrajapuram hills, the Akkana Madanna Caves, and the ancient Malleswara temple, which contains Telugu inscriptions dating from the ninth to sixteenth centuries. Spanning the river, the Prakasam Barrage connects the NTR and Guntur districts, while three major canals—Eluru, Bandar, and Ryves—traverse the urban area.
Vijayawada experiences a tropical wet and dry climate, with annual mean temperatures ranging between 23.4 and 34 °C. Summers reach peak heat in May, when maximum temperatures regularly exceed 40 °C, while December and January represent the coolest months. Precipitation arrives via the southwest and northeast monsoons, averaging 977.9 millimeters annually. Urban green spaces maintained within the city include Rajiv Gandhi Park, Raghavaiah Park, Mahatma Gandhi Park, and Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Park.
As a primary transit junction, the city is served by Vijayawada Junction, which ranks among the busiest railway stations in the nation. Local public transportation relies on a public transit system of buses and auto-rickshaws operating on compressed natural gas, electricity, and diesel.
