Villa María is a major municipal center located in the General San Martín Department within Argentina's Córdoba Province. Positioned near the geographical middle of the nation, it stands as the third largest city in the province, recording a population of 72,162 during the 2001 census, with the broader metro area reaching 119,000 residents. The city is renowned for sitting amidst a highly fertile agricultural zone that serves as the top milk-producing region in the country.
The physical setting of Villa María is defined by its placement along the left bank of the Tercero River. Geographically, it sits roughly 137 kilometers southeast of Córdoba, the provincial capital.
