Why Yabrud
Yabrud is a Syrian city situated within the Rif Dimashq countryside governorate, roughly 80 kilometers (50 miles) north of Damascus. Positioned in the Qalamoun Mountains near the Lebanese border, the city recorded a population of 25,891 during the 2004 census. It is historically recognized for its long record of human settlement, spanning from prehistoric times to the modern era.
The town's ancient origins are evidenced by the Jabroudian caves, discovered in 1930. A notable site is the Iskafta cave, where a self-taught German traveler named Alfred Rust uncovered significant prehistoric artifacts, leading to an archaeological culture named after the town. Historical references to Yabrud date back to first-century B.C. Mesopotamian pottery tablets, as well as second-century A.D. geographical writings by Ptolemy.
Among its key cultural landmarks is the Yabroud temple, an ancient structure originally dedicated to Jupiter Yabroudis that was subsequently converted into the Konstantin and Helena Cathedral. This building stands as Syria's oldest church. Records from 1838 indicate that the local population historically comprised Sunni Muslims, Melkite Catholics, and Greek Orthodox Christians.
Yabrud is also connected to various historical figures. The parents of former Argentine president Carlos Menem were born in the city before emigrating to South America prior to the conclusion of World War I. Additionally, Syrian philosopher and activist Antun Maqdisi passed away in the town, and Melkite Catholic Archbishop Gregory Atta resided there for a period during the nineteenth century.
