Why Zutphen
Zutphen is a historic city and municipality in the province of Gelderland, Netherlands, situated approximately 30 kilometers northeast of Arnhem. The settlement lies on the eastern bank of the river IJssel at the point where it joins the Berkel. Merged with the adjacent municipality of Warnsveld in 2005, the town originally began around 300 AD as a Germanic settlement built on low river dunes. First recorded in historical records during the 11th century, the name translates to "south fen."
Developing around a strategic river confluence, Zutphen constructed a circular fortress after being raided by Vikings in 882. It functioned as a royal residence during the 11th century, complete with a palatine complex. The settlement gained its town rights between 1191 and 1196, making it one of the earliest recognized towns in the country and serving as a mother town for other regional centers such as Arnhem and Doesburg. Zutphen eventually joined the economic network of the Hanseatic League. Despite sustaining numerous sieges and wartime damage over the centuries, much of its historic core survived intact.
Often called the "tower city" because its skyline features prominent historic spires without modern high-rises, Zutphen possesses one of the best-preserved medieval centers in northwestern Europe. The town contains hundreds of registered national and local monuments, including 13th- to 15th-century residences, preserved sections of the old town walls, and grand 18th- and 19th-century merchant structures near the historical market. Specific landmarks include the 1320 Berkel Gate over the river, the 1457 Bourgonje defensive turret, and the 15th-century Drogenaps Tower, a former city gate later used as a musician's home and water tower.
Religious heritage is prominent throughout the city center. The St. Walburgis Church, established in the 11th century and later rebuilt into a Gothic basilica, features a 76-meter tower housing six hand-rung bells, historical monuments, and a 1527 copper font. Attached to the church is the Librije, a public library founded in 1561 whose rare books and manuscripts remain chained to ancient wooden desks, making it one of only five remaining medieval chained libraries in Europe. Other key sites include the early 14th-century Broederen Church, now housing the municipal public library, and the 13th-century Nieuwstadt Church.
Civic landmarks include the 17th-century Wijnhuis Tower, home to the world's first properly tuned carillon crafted in 1644, where carillon concerts are performed during the summer months. Today, Zutphen also serves as a regional center for educational, medical, and judicial institutions. It is easily reached via the central Zutphen railway station, which provides regional and national rail links to Arnhem, Deventer, Zwolle, and surrounding destinations. Road access is available via several provincial highways connecting to the A1 motorway 15 kilometers to the north, supplemented by regional bus services.
