American Airlines Begins Boeing 777-300ER Retrofits with New Flagship Suites
American Airlines is upgrading its Boeing 777-300ER fleet, introducing new Flagship Suite business class seats while retiring international first class.
American Airlines has officially commenced cabin retrofits across its long-haul Boeing 777-300ER fleet, introducing upgraded Flagship Suite business class seats and expanded Premium Economy cabins while phasing out international first class. The carrier's initial reconfigured aircraft enters scheduled commercial service this month on the flagship route between New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport and Buenos Aires, Argentina. The comprehensive fleet overhaul will systematically transform all twenty of American's 777-300ER widebody aircraft through 2027.
The interior redesign significantly alters the cabin layout to emphasize premium seating options for long-haul international travel. Under the new configuration, total premium seat capacity increases from 116 to 144 seats, representing roughly 44 percent of the aircraft's total passenger capacity. The centerpiece of the redesign is the installation of 70 Flagship Suite seats in business class, each equipped with sliding privacy doors, direct aisle access, and lie-flat sleeping capabilities designed for multi-hour transoceanic journeys.
In addition to the expanded business class cabin, the retrofitted aircraft feature 44 Premium Economy seats and 30 Main Cabin Extra seats with extra legroom, while standard economy seating is adjusted slightly to 186 seats. As part of this transition, American is officially retiring its eight-seat "Flagship First" class, ending dedicated international first-class cabins across its long-haul fleet. American represents the final major legacy US carrier to phase out international first class, aligning its cabin strategy with Delta Air Lines and United Airlines, which transitioned exclusively to premium business class products years prior.
Beyond seating updates, the revamped 777-300ER cabins incorporate modernized in-flight entertainment systems with higher-resolution screens and expanded content libraries. Passengers across all cabin classes will also benefit from enhanced high-speed satellite Wi-Fi connectivity, which is offered free of charge to active members of the airline's AAdvantage frequent-flyer loyalty program. These interior upgrades aim to improve overall passenger comfort while boosting fuel efficiency and cabin seat density.
Travelers flying long-haul international routes with American Airlines—including premium services to London, Tokyo, São Paulo, Buenos Aires, and Sydney—will progressively experience the new Flagship Suite product as modified aircraft enter service. AAdvantage members seeking premium award redemptions or upgrade opportunities should monitor aircraft seat maps during booking, as retrofitted 777-300ERs replace older cabin configurations. Passengers holding existing international first-class reservations for travel after November 19 will be transitioned into the new Flagship Suite business class cabin.
