You will find Dyrehavsbakken, commonly known as Bakken, in Lyngby-Taarbæk, Denmark, approximately 10 kilometers north of central Copenhagen. Situated in the southern portion of the Dyrehaven royal deer park, you can easily reach the site via public transport at Klampenborg S-train Station roughly 600 meters away. First discovered as a natural spring in 1583 by Kirsten Piil, Bakken stands today as the world's oldest operating amusement park, originally attracting Copenhagen residents seeking clean spring water, which lured early hawkers and entertainers.
Over the centuries, the surrounding royal hunting grounds were expanded and eventually reopened to the general public in 1756. As the site grew in European fame, business owners formed the Dyrehavsbakken Tent Owners' Association of 1885 to manage facilities, garbage collection, and electricity, an association all operating park businesses must still join today. Welcoming 2.5 to 2.9 million visitors annually, Bakken is Denmark's second most popular attraction after Tivoli Gardens. Entrance into the park area is free, though rides require individual payments, coupons, or wristbands.
