Located in Humen, Dongguan city within China's Guangdong province, Weiyuan Fort offers you a captivating window into coastal-defense history. Built in 1835 following plans drawn up by the Qing government to fortify the Humen strait in the Pearl River Delta, this 360-meter-long fort played a prominent role during the Opium Wars. As you explore the site, you will see the ruins of a complex designed in the style of a crossed platform, which once housed 44 cannons to defend against the British.

These defenses included 40 dark artillery positions and four open forts, reflecting its strategic military importance. Throughout the 19th century, the fort witnessed dramatic clashes, being captured during the 1841 Battle of the Bogue, the 1847 Expedition to Canton, and the 1856 Battle of the Bogue. It later remained historically relevant when Gong Zhenzhou commanded the Humen Fortress under Sun Yat-sen's government.

Today, visiting Weiyuan Fort allows you to stand right where these historic events unfolded while taking in a striking visual contrast, as the fort is situated immediately under the modern Humen Bridge. It is a compelling historical stop along the Pearl River.
