Why Dongguan

Dongguan is a prefecture-level city situated in central Guangdong Province, China, along the Pearl River Delta. Positioned in the middle of the Guangzhou-Shenzhen economic corridor, it borders the provincial capital of Guangzhou to the north, Shenzhen to the south, Huizhou to the northeast, and the Pearl River to the west. Geographically, the terrain features eastern hills and western flatlands, complemented by more than 115 kilometers of coastline. Water, forests, and cultivated land cover a significant portion of its territory, while roughly a third of its land area is urbanized.

Lying just south of the Tropic of Cancer, Dongguan experiences a humid subtropical climate characterized by dry winters and abundant year-round precipitation. The city records an average annual temperature of 22.9 °C and receives about 1,893 millimeters of rainfall each year. Sunshine levels fluctuate seasonally, with the clearest skies typically occurring in October and the cloudiest conditions observed in March.

Human presence in the region dates back 5,000 years. The area played a notable historical role during the First Opium War in 1839, when large quantities of seized opium were destroyed in Humen, a town now located within the city's jurisdiction. Culturally, Dongguan reflects Cantonese traditions, particularly in its Weitou form, alongside Hakka heritage in prefectures such as Fenggang and Qingxi. Due to a substantial influx of economic migrants from other parts of China, Mandarin is spoken by the majority of the population.

Once predominantly an agricultural district, Dongguan transitioned into a major industrial center, becoming a leading global producer of electronics, communications equipment, and toys. Among its notable modern landmarks is the New South China Mall, recognized as one of the world's largest shopping centers. Educational and scientific attractions include the Dongguan Science and Technology Museum, situated near the Songshan Lake high-tech development zone.

For arts and athletics, the city offers venues such as the Dongguan Yulan Theater, a multipurpose facility housing two performing arts spaces, as well as the Dongguan Arena and the 16,000-seat Dongguan Basketball Center. Transportation infrastructure is extensive, featuring major expressways, cross-river spans like the Humen Pearl River Bridge, and direct rail connections linking the city to Guangzhou, Shenzhen, and Hong Kong. Local transportation is further enhanced by the Dongguan Rail Transit metro network.
