Step into history at Chengziya, a foundational archaeological site in Shandong province where the Neolithic Longshan culture was first discovered in 1928. Located about 25 kilometers east of Jinan and just west of Longshan Town, this historic area represents the second largest known prehistorical settlement after Shimao. When you visit, you will explore a location that proved a major turning point in understanding the native origins of Chinese civilization, overturning old theories of Western origin.
As a former regional capital constructed around 2600 BC, Chengziya was enclosed by an innovative rammed-earth wall and fed by a deep moat. Today, the site is protected and made accessible by the Chengziya Ruins Museum. The museum building itself features a unique design shaped like a mythical bird by architectural expert Yang Hongxun.
Inside, you can examine cultural layers spanning the Longshan culture, Yueshi culture, and Zhou Dynasty. See impressive displays of fine wheel-turned black polished pottery, gray pottery, rectangular stone axes, early inscriptions, oracle bones, ancient house foundations, regular wells, and rare Neolithic horse bones that highlight the deep history of ancient Chinese urban life.
