Located in Lang'ata, about 20 kilometers (12 miles) outside the center of Nairobi, Kenya, the Giraffe Centre offers you a unique chance to connect with East Africa's vulnerable Rothschild's giraffe. Founded in 1979 by Jock Leslie-Melville and his wife Betty, this vital wildlife conservation facility and nature sanctuary began right on their personal property when they rescued two baby giraffes to launch a dedicated breeding program. That initial effort achieved incredible success, eventually allowing conservationists to reintroduce multiple breeding pairs of these rare grassland giraffes back into Kenyan national parks.
Opened officially as a tourist destination in 1983, the center doubles as an inspiring educational hub for urban school children and international travelers alike. When you visit, the main highlight is stepping up onto a special raised observation platform where you can hand-feed these magnificent, towering creatures at eye level. As you observe the giraffes, keep an eye on the ground as well, because the sanctuary is also home to several warthogs that freely roam the area right alongside their tall companions.
