You will find Pischalauski Castle, historically known as Minsk Detention Center No. 1 or informally as Volodarka, located in Minsk, Belarus. Built by landlord Rudolph Pischallo and designed by architect Kazimir Khrschonovich with approval from Tsar Nicholas I, this stone structure was completed by 1824 and commissioned in 1825.
If you appreciate historic architecture, you can observe a grand three-story main building flanked by four corner towers and surrounded by a prison yard. Registered as a state architectural monument, it is affectionately nicknamed the Belarusian Bastille. Over its complex history, the site served as Belarus's central prison, holding prominent writers, political figures like Józef Piłsudski, WWII partisans, and modern political activists, while also operating as the nation's sole death row facility until closing in April 2024.
While visiting, you will reflect on its heavy past, from 1930s Stalinist repressions in its basements to Nazi occupation history. Though a tower suffered a partial collapse in 2008 and repairs were needed, the landmark remains a sobering stop for travelers seeking honest, deep insights into the region's intense political and cultural heritage.
