Pischalauski Castle

You will find Pischalauski Castle, historically known as Minsk Detention Center No. 1 or informally as Volodarka, located in Minsk, Belarus. Built by landlord Rudolph Pischallo and designed by architect Kazimir Khrschonovich with approval from Tsar Nicholas I, this stone structure was completed by 1824 and commissioned in 1825.

Registered as a state architectural monument, it is affectionately nicknamed the Belarusian Bastille. Over its complex history, the site served as Belarus's central prison, holding prominent writers, political figures like Józef Piłsudski, WWII partisans, and modern political activists, while also operating as the nation's sole death row facility until closing in April 2024.
