Standing proudly atop the Skólavörðuholt hilltop near central Reykjavík, Hallgrímskirkja is Iceland's largest church and second tallest building at 244 feet. As a striking symbol of national identity, this Protestant Lutheran parish church offers you an unforgettable stop in the heart of the city. State Architect Guðjón Samúelsson designed its dynamic Expressionist style to mirror Iceland’s dramatic landscape—resembling glaciers, mountains, and columnar basalt "organ pipe" rock formations.

As you approach, you will see a prominent statue of explorer Leif Erikson standing right out front, a 1930 gift from the United States. Inside, explore a spacious interior featuring a donated 1948 statue of Jesus by Einar Jónsson and a magnificent 15-meter-tall Johannes Klais pipe organ boasting 5,275 pipes. Look up to appreciate its unique architecture, including curved side wings and a sanctuary evoking Viking war helmets.

A lift takes you up the landmark tower to an observation deck, offering sweeping views of Reykjavík and the surrounding mountain scenery. If you time your visit right, you can listen to the carillon of 29 bells chiming across the capital city every 15 minutes.
