Located on Via Francesco de Sanctis in the historic center of Naples, Italy, just northeast of San Domenico Maggiore, Cappella Sansevero is a magnificent chapel originally built in 1590 by John Francesco di Sangro. Formally named the Chapel of Santa Maria della Pietà, this space was transformed into a family burial chapel and given its definitive form by Raimondo di Sangro, Prince of Sansevero. As you explore, you will discover almost thirty extraordinary Rococo works of art, including remarkable marble sculptures famed for their intricate depictions of translucent veils and fishing nets.
The highlight of the collection is Giuseppe Sanmartino's 1753 masterpiece, the Veiled Christ, shown alongside Antonio Corradini's Veiled Truth and Francesco Queirolo's Release from Deception. Look up to admire Francesco Maria Russo's 1749 ceiling fresco, Glory of Paradise, and notice hints of the original black-and-white labyrinth floor. Descending into the basement, you can view unique anatomical models showcasing detailed circulatory systems, as well as Giuseppe Pesce's Madonna con Bambino painting created with Raimondo's custom wax-based paints.
