Arch of Reunification

Located south of Pyongyang, North Korea, straddling the multi-laned Reunification Highway leading to the Korean Demilitarized Zone, the Arch of Reunification (officially the Monument to the Three-Point Charter for National Reunification) was a historic sculptural arch opened in August 2001. If you studied this iconic concrete structure before its removal, you would recall two Korean women in traditional dress (chosŏn-ot), representing North and South Korea, leaning forward to jointly hold a sphere containing a map of a reunified Korea.

This sphere served as the emblem for the Three Charters, while the arch's lower section showcased bronze bas-reliefs of independence movement scenes alongside a plinth engraved with support messages from various individuals, organizations, and nations. Built during the height of the Sunshine Policy, its dimensions held deep meaning: 61.5 meters wide for the June 15th Joint Declaration and 30 meters high for the Three Principles of National Reunification.

Groundbreaking occurred in August 1999, and it later featured on several postage stamps. However, after Kim Jong Un declared South Korea a primary foe and abandoned peaceful reunification, North Korea demolished this major monument in January 2024.

Please note that the Arch of Reunification was demolished in January 2024 and can no longer be visited in person.
